AUCHENTOSHAN HISTORY

DUNTOCHER DISTILLERY

John Bulloc acquired the Auchentoshan estate and established the Duntocher distillery as a creative measure to avoid the taxman.

AUCHENTOSHAN DISTILLERY IS ESTABLISHED

Duntocher distillery receives its legal license as a whisky distillery.

AUCHENTOSHAN HISTORY

John Hart & Alexander Filshie

After financial turbulence, the distillery was sold to John Hart & Alexander Filshie, who renamed it Auchentoshan. 

 

John Bulloch resided on the estate until his passing at the age of 87 in 1846.

C.H. Curtis and Co Ltd.

Auchentoshan had passed into the ownership of C.H. Curtis and Co Ltd. Also of Greenock and had an output of the order of 50,000 gallons a year.

The Maclachlan Brothers

The Maclachlan Brothers George and John purchased the distillery, ushering in a period of stability and success that lasted for 57 years.

HMS Queen Mary & HMS Queen Elizabeth

The Distillery contributes to community spirit, offering complimentary drams to locals during the launches of HMS Queen Mary (1934) and HMS Queen Elizabeth (1938).

World War II

A German bomb raid severely damages the distillery, destroying a warehouse. Whisky production was stopped during World War II, due to the targeting of the River Clyde and its shipyards.

Production Resumes

Production is restarted after being temporarily halted, due to bombing of the River Clyde during World War II.

J&R Tennent

J&R Tennet LTD., renowned brewers, acquire the distillery and decide to use malt barley from the breweries in Edinburgh.

Eddie Cairns LTD

Eddie Cairns LTD. Takes over under the stylish leadership of John Milne, upon his passing, his obituary in the Glasgow Herald remembered him as the 'last bowler-hatted gentleman'.

The Morrison Family

Stanley P. Morrison purchases the distillery for £325,000, bringing in a new era of ownership involving the esteemed Morrison family and Japanese whisky titan Suntory LTD.

Ownership transitions to Suntory, initiating a successful period of winning numerous prestigious awards.
